Garage door goes up but won't close
Garage doors that reverse or won't close usually have blocked or misaligned safety sensors. Safe checks you can do in a minute.
About 3 minutes · no tools needed
Safety first. Never touch the springs, cables or the door's track hardware. Keep children and pets clear while testing.
- 1
Check the sensors
Two small sensors face each other near the floor on each side of the door. Make sure nothing blocks them and wipe the lenses clean.
- 2
Look at the sensor lights
Both usually have a small light. A blinking or off light means they are misaligned; gently point them back at each other.
- 3
Check the lock button
Many wall panels have a LOCK or VACATION button that blocks the remote. Press it to unlock.
- 4
Check power
Make sure the opener on the ceiling is plugged in.
Stop and contact maintenance if
- · A spring or cable looks broken
- · The door is crooked or off its track
- · The opener runs but the door doesn't move
What to tell them: Tell them what the door does, whether the sensor lights are on, and send a photo of the opener's label.
