No heat from the furnace
Safe checks when the heat won't come on: thermostat, batteries, the furnace switch, the filter and the panel door.
About 5 minutes · no tools needed
Safety first. If you smell gas, leave and call the gas company from outside. If it is freezing and someone vulnerable is at home, tell maintenance it is an emergency.
- 1
Check the thermostat
Set it to HEAT, a few degrees above the room temperature. Replace the batteries if the screen is blank.
- 2
Find the furnace switch
Near the furnace there is usually a light-switch style power switch. Make sure it is ON.
- 3
Check the filter
A very dirty filter can make the furnace shut itself off. Replace it if you have the right size.
- 4
Close the panel door
Make sure the front panel of the furnace is fully closed; a safety switch keeps it off when the door is loose.
Stop and contact maintenance if
- · Any gas smell
- · The furnace clicks or tries to start and stops again
- · Still no heat after these checks
What to tell them: Tell them what the thermostat shows, what you checked, and send a photo of the furnace label.
